Beginning January 1, 2015, employers have new obligations to report injuries and illnesses to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The method of reporting injuries and illnesses, as well a public access to an employer’s workplace accident information, will also change.
After the first of the year, employers must report all in-patient hospitalizations, amputations or losses of an eye within 24 hours if the hospitalization, amputation or eye loss occurred within 24 hours of a workplace incident. Currently, reports to OSHA of workplace incidents can be made in-person or by telephone to an OSHA area office. OSHA also provides a toll-free, central telephone number. As a new option, OSHA is developing an electronic form of reporting, which will be available on www.osha.gov. In public statements made this fall, OSHA announced its intention to make reports by employers of employee fatalities, injuries, hospitalizations, amputations and eye losses publicly available via its website.
